We Come Apart by Sarah Crossan and Brian Conaghan

Written in prose from two perspectives, this fast paced novel delivers a story of love and new beginnings. Nicu, a Romanian immigrant, is running from a future he can’t control. Jess, a girl from a broken home, is stuck in a past she can’t escape. When convicted of petty theft, they meet in court ordered community service. While having a great start and an artfully poetic tone, this novel falls short as its cardboard characters and cliche ending taint the collective piece. The protagonists, as well as the minor characters, have little character development, and their thought processes are unclear. The “surprise twist” towards the end seems to be out of place with the rest of the novel, and the conflict resolution is weak. Overall, it’s an marginal read.
